Taste - Darling Quarter

Ryry let us in on this amazing little gem after a happy hour wining sesh in the Tokiol Hotel one sunny Friday afternoon a couple of weeks ago. Since then we've been back 3 times and were delighted to find they have a BOGOF on the pizza's Monday to Wednesday from 5pm and happy hour $5 tap beers from 5pm - 6pm.
Granted the pizza menu is limited to only 4 choices but actually it works really well, after
all - whats the point in spending 20 mins reading through a long winded description of 15 different pizza when you cant even remember which was which when it comes time to finally ordering.
The prawn and chili is my favourite, but they all have their merits....especially when covered in tabasco. The proscuitto and rocket is pretty perfect too, the meatball one is sweet and cheesy and the margerita does exactly what it says on the tin.
Also a nice spot to people watch and perv.
Love a BOGOF.
LOVE a pizza.
LOVE HAPPY HOUR.

The Norfolk

Was working late so me and Gugustin decided to head round to the Norfolk on Cleveland Street for $3 TACO NIGHTTTTT!
When we first walked into the front bar I was thinking that it was a bit of a dive - but then as we walked around to the back bar and out to the garden section I was impressed... Heaters and beetlejuice couches and lots of smoking and drinking! So we got some drinks, found a spot and had a look at the menu. We decided on a pork taco each, a beef taco each, the mini hotdogs and some fries.
The taco's were really good, and bigger than the excelsior taco's, spicy and saucy and delicious. The fries were crinkle cut and really crispy and double fried. And the hotdogs were covered in this crispy fried oniony potato rings (i have no idea what it actually was, but it was delish) and had this cucumber relish underneath, soaking up the ketchup and mustardy goodness... Pretty outrageous but fairly tiny (especially compared to the excelsiors' cheesy monster hotdogs).
Could definitely be our new summer haunt but the beer garden was filled with some really saps, the most annoying of which was sitting at our table, ruining our buzz with his shit head. Lol

Soggy nuts - yummm!

A few years ago, when a wiley naturopath asked me if I had tried soaking my nuts, I casually replied 'no it's just the way my trousers hang'.
I scarcely thought about that sexy day ever again until I saw these 'activated nuts' in the health food store yesterday for $10 a bag and I decided to do some investimagating.... Turns out that lady wasn't just a pervy crackpot, and after a spot of rampant googling I found out that all nuts and seeds should be soaked before we humans eat em, otherwise they can be difficult to digest.... See clipping below:
"All nuts (and seeds) have an enzyme inhibitor that keeps them from sprouting into the tree, bush or plant that they carry inside of them. Once they are planted in the ground and given some water, the enzyme inhibitor is destroyed and the nut/seed can begin to sprout."
So I decided to give it a whirl, since I am a dab hand with a sprouting jar anyway, whats the worst that can happen?! I dragged my trusty sprout jar from the back of the pantry from whence it had been recently relegated, due to the wintery weather and promptly got to work... I put them in the jar 2 parts water to 1 part almonds, soaked them overnight and then rinsed and drained them this morning and they were awesome... I thought they might taste a bit gross but actually theyre sweeter and nicer than normal nuts.
Now I'm planning to make activated nut butter to spread on my toast with my freshly whizzed 'date and raisin chai spiced puree' that I made in my new blender last night.
Will let you know how it all goes... I can tell you're as excited as I am to hear the results. Teehee.

The bondi social

Super super tired after nearly a month of getting up at 6am 6 days a week for work and drinking pretty much every night so just a quick post about the bondi social. We went down last night coz Dandelle had heard it was a good spot and I was expecting it to be a kicking bar but it's actually a restaurant and bar with a nice wine and cocktail list including a spicy coconut Thai cocktail but I didn't have the stomach (or the budget) to sample it last night so we just stuck to a bottle of NZ Pinot Gris and the most expensive bottle of San Pellegrino I've ever encountered ($8 - ridic or na?). Got the best table in the house,

right on the corner or the terrace, under a heater with a view of the whole of bondi beach only marred by those weird Xmas trees along by the road. It was loverly but unfortunately our waiter was an imp nymph gimp and the terrace closed at 11 so we ended up in bb's (ugh) and then the bondi rd hotel (ugh ugh). Ripped my amazing new tights, smoked 20 fags, drank way too much whisky and dry, had to take a taxi home coz it was almost 1.30am when I realised the time and I had to get up at 5.30am and drive to work.... Which i did, crosseyed and stuffing a crumpet into my face to soak up the booze incase i got breathalysed.... Oh well, all in a fri nights work.

Mr B's Thai delishness

After a really shitty week of work out in Strathgay, I headed in to the city to meet Gustin and Vadge for some food and booze and we ended up at one of our usual smoking section of Mr B's on the corner of Pitt Street & Goulburn Street. The last time me and Gustin were here we smoked so much the bouncer was forced to kick us out much to our absolute amusement.
They do cheapo jugs of cheapo beerz & happy hour drinks deals and they have a bar menu full of meat on a stick and deep fried delights. They also have a full dinner menu of Japanese and Thai food and the last time we were here they had a Thai band on which made me a bit teary hahahaha.

Vadge said I could order for all of us to share so I went for a selection from both menus. Having tried the 'look chin' (pork balls on a skewer served with a chili jam) last time we were here, I got a plate of them to share along with some satay skewers and some soft shell crab sushi too. Then from the main menu I ordered the larb gai which is a traditional thai salad of minced chicken with shallots, chili, thai herbs and plenty of fresh lime served on a bed of lettuce (sometimes comes with cabbage in Thailand and is even tastier), and also a braised duck in a salty sweet cantonese style sauce with chinese greens, and a big bowl of steaming fragrant rice for the table.
The larb gai was definitely the hit of the meal though - it was perfectly spiced and served with plenty of crispy lettuce which was gradually soaking up the juices... $54 for the lot - Bargain town!

Keralan fish curry with dahl, cumin raita and fluffy basmati rice

Threw this together for dinner tonight, using the basa fish fillets from the freezer and also using up all the veggie leftovers along the way.

It was actually pretty tasty for my first attempt at a fish curry, I couldn't find the cardamom pods while it was in crucial cooking stages though so they only got thrown in at the end unfortunately. I even threw in the leftover cream from the dauphinoise we had on Sunday and it worked really well...

And served with a dollop of thick cumin greek style yoghurt raita on top...

Yummm, and I even ate the leftovers with the dahl and fish curry mixed together, baby peas fried into the rice, and a defrosted basa fillet panfried in salt, pepper and lemon.

Thrifty-licious rent week fuuuuüûd!!

Just had an amazing Sunday roast compliments of Danielle...

Whole leg of Lamb marinated in garlic and rosemary and cooked in D's balsamic baste. Served with creamed spinach, sautéed courgette & petit pan squash, dauphinoise potatoes, sweet spicy meat juice gravy....

Omgggggggg the meat was perfectly cooked, and all the accoutrements were beautifully done as well.

Thanks D, you nailed it! Hope you'll come and cook every week.

Pad Grapow Gai w/ Rice Vermicelli Noodles

Just made the leftover pad grapow from the other night. went with the usual base but I'm experimenting with different types of veg, at the moment my favourites are asparagus (cut into 1cm lengths), silverbeet stalks and leaves finely chopped, green and red capsicum, chunks of mushroom (I like to buy one big one and chop it into meaty chunks), half a sliced red onion and some green beans sliced into 1cm pieces diagonally.

Today I really couldn't be bothered waiting for the rice to cook so I found some packs of rice vermicelli and boiled them up to toss them into the mix... Meanwhile I fried a lil eggy wegg, sunny side up.

The end result was really a treat, served with lime wedges, pickled chilli, and some fish sauce on top of the egg.

And the egg has just gotta be runny on the inside...

YUMM woon sen (spot the cheesy pun anyone?)

'Thanon KhaoSan' - Pitt Street

Had a lunch voucher for this place so we decided to give a try on Friday afternoon to celebrate my mid term break. We often order from the Bondi branch and it's always good, so you can only imagine my delight when I saw that the city branches menu is twice the size and they also do lots of the Thai desserts, and even have a tuktuk in the restaurant... It felt like home!

I was squealing with glee and welling up a bit when I realised they had all my noodleshop lunch favourites: KHAO KHAA MOO, KHAO MOO DAENG, KHAO MUN GAI, GUAY TIEOW GAI, LOOK CHIN, KANOM JIIN ....wow! And even sangsom, although it's insanely overpriced.

I had the 'Khao khaa moo' (directly translates as = rice leg pig) one of my absolute favourites in Thailand and always a hit with friends when I brought them to my favourite noodle shop in Koh Chang ...it's a tender roast pork leg that comes served with all the fat in a sweet star anise gravy served with the usual pickled cabbage, steamed greens, spicy vinegar naam jiim (sauce) and half a boiled egg with rice on the side. It was pretty good... Tender, falling apart meat, loads of sweet blubbery fat (which I wouldn't usually eat but I made a pretty good attempt), and enough of the pickled cabbage and greens to last through most of the rice... อร่อยมาก!! $8.90

Gustin had the 'Khao moo daeng' (= rice pig red), which is another favourite of mine, it's a pork loin fillet that is roasted until the outside turns red (you often see this hanging up from a hook in a noodleshop glass cabinet and its also really good in bamee noodle soup with dumplings and 'hooa cha tao'**) The red pork is thinly sliced and served over rice with this sweet BBQ gravy, cucumber slices, half boiled egg, and bowl of broth - to my absolute delight the broth had 'hooa cha tao' in it which I convinced Augustine to let me have... Yessss. It was all pretty delishbags too but the meat was quite fatty and I was slightly disappointed that there was no sliced sweet Chinese sausage with it, as it's usually served in Thailand. $8.90 also (I think)

(Gustin was disgusted that they put 'half boiled egg' on the menu instead of 'half a boiled egg' and hours later he brought up the fact that he felt really swindled that they only gave him half an egg hahahah).

We also had some wontons with pork and some chicken wings to share and a couple of singhas and all in all it was a pretty impressive and will definitely be back for more of their noodleshop fare next time I'm in the city for lunch - although I was so full I couldn't drink much beer afterwards, I did manage to fit a Portuguese egg tart from the Chinese bakery a few doors down on Pitt Street.... YUMMMMMMM

** 'hooa cha tao' is like some kind of Asian turnip but I've only ever tried it in Thai noodle shops, they use it to make the broth and sometimes you get a chunk in your noodle soup which I consider a major treat! I don't know what the vegetable looks like uncooked though or what it's called in English so if anyone knows the stuff I mean, please message me because I would love to make noodle soup with it.

Toona melt-gasm

Although I had a whole lot of Pad Grapow left over from last night, after having it twice over the last 24 hours I fancied something a bit more fatty, fatty.

So I had a look in the pantry and lo and behold... tuna, sweetcorn, green bell pepper, scallions, hot saaauuce, trocomare salt, black pepper and mayo - toooona melt time!!

I also happened to buy a loaf of Nonna's Panne Di Casa yesterday on my junga trip, it's a crusty kind of sourdough loaf and it's SO good when you toast it and then pour 'olitalia' olive oil on it.

So I toasty toasty, then I poury poursy, then I put the spicy tuna mayo mix on, loads of shredded cheese on top and put it under the grill for 5 mins - til the cheese bubbled and browned.

It was super delishbags, but I was in too much of a hurry to stuff it in my face so I didn't take pics... Soz lolz!

I did happen to take pics of the awesome meat pie I made for me and gugustin on Saturday night so I'll just post a pic of that instead...

Beef, cheese and gravy pie in a puff pastry, served with sweet potato mash, baby peas and this sauteed spicy silverbeet/mushroom combo, which was really yum too.

Happy birthday Grill'd!!! ...Happy birthday everybody!!

Headed down to Grill'd (healthy burgers) this evening on the corner of Crown and Oxford Street in Darlinghurst for their 1st birthday BOGOF (best abbreviation ever btw: Buy One Get One Free FYI). The place was buuusy, done up with loads of balloons and party stuff and had a nice lively vibe.

We were in the mood for chicken burgers so we both went for the 'Zen Hen', which has satay sauce and shredded carrot, with that amazing crunchy lettuce of theirs and a side of the amazing fries with herbed mayo and loads of Tabasco mixed with ketchup. It's like they double-fry the chips they're so crunchy and coated in a herby sea salt... Freaking delish. Major burger boner!!

They even put a little cupcake on the side for us for their birthday! Awwwwwwwesome.

Excelsioooorrrrr!!!

So we ended up in the Excelsior on Foveaux street in Surry Hills. It's right around the corner from Gus' place on Belmore and we had been there on our drunken Friday night escapades a few weeks ago and had a great time. It's been recently taken over by the people who run the Beresford on Bourke St... And the back is converted into a Mexican restaurant which is full of pinata's and Mexican style decor, but in a cool way.

It was fairly lively even for a rainy Tuesday night. Mikey had the steak and I had the fish, which was delicious! Not sure what kind of fish it was but it was meaty, tender and crispy skinned, served with a spicy salsa verde and some kind of celeriac salad which worked really well with the flavour of the fish and lots of spicy piquant sauce on the side which made my eye sockets sweat a bit... Yumm. We also shared a hotdog which was covered in a mountain of fluffy shredded cheese and only $7!

Awesome little spot for midweek craic.

Free kerastase hair treatment!! Awesome.

Just went for my free kerastase hair treatment at Alan Coban in bondi junction westfield. I just assumed there'd be a catch but it was absolutely free and it was spectacular!

They shampoo'd, rinsed repeated, treated, hot toweled, massaged, rinsed AND blowdried my hair and left it feeling really soft and somehow thicker.

Then as I was leaving, they gave me a '$20 off your next visit' voucher.... I want to go again!!!

DAHL for all occasions...

Loobish emailed me this morning asking for my dahl recipe so since I was typing it out thought i might as well copy it to here... not much of a strict recipe really though, you can adapt it to suit whatever you have in your cupboard at the time, once theres red split lentils and turmeric you cant really go wrong...
So to start off I just wash the lentils - red split lentils that you can get in any supermarket, give them a good wash til the water runs clear. Then bring them to the boil in a big pot, 2 parts water to one part lentils, adding turmeric, some curry powder, any indian spices you fancy really (lizbob maitra makes hers with just turmeric and its really good too), bit o ground cumin, a bit of fresh grated ginger, sliced onions, tomatoes, anything you want really (you can fry the onions with a clove of garlic before adding the lentils if you can be bothered, I usually just throw them in to boil up). Give it a good stir, turn it down and simmer it until the lentils are soft and broken down, adding water if you need to - depending how soupy you like it. It also thickens as it cools so it's usually good to be generous with the water.

(There's also a tasty variation where you can fry up onions, cumin seeds and mustard seed in a hot pan with some ghee or vegetable oil, until the onions brown and the seeds are popped and then you stir that into the cooked dahl.)
Then when it's off the heat, I just slap a load of chopped fresh coriander in and stir it well. If you have a lot it freezes really well in glad bags. I like to put the thickened version in to freeze and then if you want it soupy you juat add water as it defrosts.

You can have it soupy, with a spoonful of salted butter stirred in before serving with fluffy tilda basmati and a load of Greek yoghurt with ground cumin stirred in.

Or use the thick version on buttery hot toast, or on crackers.

J'Amazing, omg SO making it when I get home!!!

Not even bloody mary oyster shots and prosecco can soften the blow of losing RyRy...

But it certainly helps....
Went down to Vue on bondi beach for Ryry's leaving dinner last night, the food was awesome as always. We had 2 dozen oysters between 5 of us, served with bloody mary shots. Then Claus cranked out some prosecco and the food came at our table like an avalanche of delicious. Seafood paella with mussels in it, spicy and chewy and sweet - with chunks of fish in there and peas! I love peas. Then the famous arancini balls filled with pesto and peas (yesssss!) served with a tomato salsa on a bed of rocket - amazing, and then chorizo in a tomato sauce. There were other things too I'm sure but unfortunately I had too much prosecco and can't really remember. Oat got the tiramisu for desert and even though I'm not a fan of tiramisu, it was pretty tasty. We also had some of Claus's own desert cocktail which had almond syrup in it or something, it was tropical and delishbags too.

Golden Century Late Nite Chinese

So after Ry-ry's leaving party last night we jumped in a cab down to Golden Century Chinese in Haymarket (Sussex St), which is open til about 4am and the food is amazing! When we arrived aims and clauclau already had a table full of these amazingly sweet giant scallops in garlicy oyster style sauce with veg, a platter of roast sweet duck with pink crispy skin and tender meat along with all them trimmings for hoisin duck pancakes, heaps of fried rice which was perfectly made - chewy, oily, salty and fragrant. Followed by some battered chicken in sweet and sour sauce and loads of Jasmine green tea and tsingtsao beer to boot... I foresee myself ending up there most nights out in the city from now on.

Friday Friday gotta get doon on Friday....

So now that I have my head back together after yesterdays hell - a quick run down of what me and GuGu got up to on Friday night.
Started off on the corner of Crown and Oxford st at Grill'd for healthy burgers, where we had cheese and pickle burgers with fries and herby mayo - as Oprah might say "it was ahmaaaazinnng!!!"

Then we went up to Lo-fi on Taylor Square for a couple of drinks, it was fine but a little bit wanky and quite pricey. Not really in keeping with me and Gustins Friday night cheap beers night so after Aims headed off to dinner with friends, we bailed out of there and headed down to the Beresford but only gave it the once over before deciding the crowd was way to suity and left there and headed to the cricketers arms which was waaay more up our street. It was a pretty cold night and there was a nice cristmassy feel to it, I was drinking 'White rabbit' which is delishbags but Gus reckons it's what might have given me the hangover from exorcism hell the next day so it may infact be the devils work. After that we decided to head down to this weird hostel bar by central station to try to get some $10 jugs of beers but it was too late when we got there so we just drank a couple of schooners and then headed to the kebab shop on the corner of devonshire st and elizabeth st in surry hills, they do amazing kebabs and toast them in the panini toaster with loads of hot sauce. Scoffed that and then on the way back to gus's we stumbled upon a bar on the corner of fouveaux st and belmore called the 'excelsior' which has a big Mexican restaurant out the back and a dj playing some good 80s tunes so we ended up dancing and drinking a few more.
All in all it was a good night but I must remember not to ever do that on a Friday night again with work at 6.30am the next morning...
